Yes, Jon Gruden gave Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million Christmas gift, but it’s not as bad as it sounds – The Athletic

“Yeah, he’ll be back.”

That’s what Raiders coach Jon Gruden said three months ago about receiver Jordy Nelson. The team even moved up a $3.6 million roster bonus and cut him a check. 

Best Christmas present ever. 

The Raiders, of course, cut Nelson on Thursday. (They also cut backup quarterback A.J. McCarron.) 

Nelson’s $3 million salary would’ve become guaranteed on Friday, and there was a $500,000 roster bonus, so they saved some cash and $3.5 million in salary-cap space. They take a dead-money hit of $1.8 million. 

Before you freak out at flushing away $3.6 million, three things: 

Gruden is crazy. He would probably tell you so himself. 

Nelson wasn’t an ideal complement to newcomers Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams (think quick slot type), so just add that $3.6 million to that $52.1 million guaranteed. See … peanuts. 

It’s very possible that the Raiders told Nelson they were going…
